Today while I was at church of all places, someone told me that the New York Jets sent a letter to Appalachian State University senior quarterback Armanti Edwards. ProFootballWeekly recently ranked Edwards the fifth best senior quarterback.
Edwards has lead the Mountaineers to two national championship victories, and a win against a highly ranked Michigan team. Edwards did not play yesterday, but last week he completed 21 of 24 passes.
Edwards is the only player in Division I history to run for 4,000 yards and throw for 9,000 yards. Edwards received the Walter Payton award in 2008, which recognizes him as the top player in Division I.
Edwards is small for an NFL quarterback, weighing only 184 pounds, and has already struggled with injuries in his college career. Edwards is also only 6 feet tall. Others project him as 5-11. He has a projected 4.59 40 yard dash.
Armanti has never had a passer rating in his four seasons that was under 140.0. Edwards has also never compiled less than a 60 % completion percentage. Many former NFL personnel, including Ron wolf think that Edwards could be an NFL passer.
Here is my favorite highlight video of Edwards:
The Jets currently have Mark Sanchez as their franchise quarterback, but backup Kellen Clemen's contract will expire after the season. Edwards could take on a Brad Smith type role if the Jets draft him.
