The Detroit Lions will release outside linebacker Julian Peterson according to Tom Kowalski of MLive.com. Peterson will make $8 million next season. The official release will be made in several weeks.
In 14 starts this season Peterson recorded 83 tackles and a sack, not exactly stats that are worth $8 million a season. Last saeson Peterson also started 14 games and recorded 79 tackles and 4.5 sacks.
"I will address that. I met with Julian on Monday and we had a great meeting. I thanked him for his two years of service to the organization. Anytime you have 31 straight starts for a team, you've given a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make that happen, but I thanked him and told him we're not going to bring him back. We shook hands and parted ways. I think it's time to move on,'' Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said when asked why Peterson didn't start in week 17.
Chris McCosky of the Detroit News also reports linebacker Jordon Dizon will not return next season.
Linebacker should be the Lions top need entering free agency, although they could also look at an upgrade at cornerback.
